6. Project description
As a result of the project implementation, the National Schengen Information System (NS.SIS) will be prepared for connection to the Central Schengen Information System (CS.SIS) for efficient and high-quality control of the external border of the Republic of Latvia and the European Union, using the European Union and national information resources. Also, the economic interests of the European Union and the state of Latvia will be better protected and internal security will be ensured more effectively.
In order to achieve this goal, it is necessary to upgrade the existing Second Generation National Schengen Information System to the version 3.0 of the Interface Control Document technical documentation within the period set by the European Commission. The modernization of the system will include the improvement of the N.SIS II system itself, the related national data storage register and the modernization of the SIRENE data flow system. In addition to the planned modernization works, it is necessary to perform compliance testing of the entire data processing complex in cooperation with the developer of the Central Schengen Information System. Given the complexity of such compliance testing on the number of tests to be performed (more than 500 test scenarios), the formal testing process requires the preparation of the aforementioned data processing suite for these tests, as well as a series of available test scenarios using a simulator instead of the central system.
As a result, the Latvian part of the second generation Schengen Information System will meet the existing technical requirements of the European Commission, as well as the obligations assumed by the Republic of Latvia in fulfilling the requirements of the Schengen Convention and the Schengen acquis will be ensured.
The project is planned to be implemented within 11 months (in the period from 26 January 2011 to 30 December 2011).
